Shattered Dreams
For Charlotte White

Shattered Dreams was written in 1998 (completed 21st Feb.) for Charlotte White's 18th Birthday and has subsequently been performed a number of times always meeting with success. The style is of a pop-jazz nature with a complex piano part and simpler vocals. The song went on to be included in my A-Level portfolio. ‘Shattered Dreams’ has gone through many version and keys. A lot of interest was shown in the song earlier this year which made me plan to create a definitive version. Well, at last the definitive version is here and back in the original key of Dm! Charlotte and I recorded the piece back in 1998 (see mp3). This recording was of one of Charlotte and my early read-throughs of the piece and so is naturally littered with mistakes. However, as this was the only recording ever made it was all I had to go on for the new edit. I hope to re-record the piece soon with Charlotte and will put the mp3 here asap.

Verse 1:
A long time ago, I was ignorant then, I should have seen the truth.
Ambition was life for me; how stupid it all now seems.
I set my sights high, I can see it now, it causes me such pain;
to know what has past since then, I wouldn't do it again.

Chorus:
It's too late to turn back now, to be welcomed by your embrace.
Now I know what you mean to me, all I'm left with is shattered dreams.

Verse 2:
A welcomed r-turn is all I dream a-bout: to take you in my arms.
Forgive and for-get what I've done; we could have another chance.
I thought I would try to make it up but you'd already moved on.
Wrong place and wrong time for me, regret seems to come easily.

Chorus X2

Very pop and professional

Very nicely done. I can't imagine some of those arpeggios are possible for very many pianists at that speed, but they were lovely to listen to. There was a nice balance to the vocal and piano sections. This could easily be sold as is for pop music, some slight rearranging as jazz. Lyrics were nice, but I felt like I was left hanging a bit by the vague suggestion in the chorus that there was some choice which led to it being "too late . . . to be welcomed by your embrace." Perhaps a bridge to explain that? There are a lot of popular songs that are that vague in their lyrics, but they aren't the ones that endure.
