March to the Scaffold

March to the Scaffold was written in 1998 whilst I was studying for my A-Levels. In this original version the piece did not contain the middle section (bb.24-61) nor the variation that makes up the final section. The piece was revised and completed on the 3/3/06.

After a brief introduction in which the quaver motif is established, chords are sounded in the low register of the piano in a march style. The main theme enters at b8 being highly chormatic. This theme (A) is accompanied by march-style chords. The theme is repeated (bb.16-24) in octaves before the first section concludes. The middle section (bb.24-57) was totally improvised using Sibelius and my Clavinova to record and notate the results. Hints of the original quaver motif are retained throughout this section. At bar 58 the quaver motif from the opening returns in its original form leading into a reprise of theme A. Significant variation was added to this section during the 're composition' in March 2006. The final section build to a climax as the score changes from two staves to three. The piece closes with the quaver motif and a descending scale.

March to the Scaffold is still awaiting its first performance which should be later on this year.
