The Suite from Lord of the Rings was my second piece to be arrange for Furze Platt Senior School Orchestra. The arrangement was completed in March 2003 and consists of four movements:

1) Concerning Hobbits

2) Edoras

3) A Knife in the Dark

4) The Breaking of the Fellowship

The first movement consists of the wonderful Shire/hobbit theme with solo violin dulcimer and accordian (the latter two provided by keyboards). Movement two uses the majestic Edoras theme presented by solo violin and whole orchestra in turn. The third movement uses the menacing 5/4 theme that is associated with Isengard and the orchs. It begins with pulsing 5/4 rhythms and heavy brass before giving way to woodwind and choir. The movement ends with the return of the pulsing idea. The finale begins with the fellowship theme leading into a performance of the song ("when the cold of Winter comes...") scored for orchestra, solo voice and choir. The fellowship theme then concludes the suite.

The suite is scored for:

Flutes 1,2
Oboes 1,2
Clarinets 1,2
