Dream Tunnel
Dream Tunnel was the first composition I wrote at the age of 10 (1990). It is in the Aeolian mode with an ostinato accompaniment. The piece was recently dedicated to Hannah Baker, my best friend from primary school. Hannah was involved with naming the piece and also told me recently that she had dug out the manuscript and had a play through it after all these years. At the time of composition, I played the piano totally by ear so therefore did not have a clue as how to read music. The school music teacher (Mrs. Burd) asked a musical friend of hers to bring his computer to the school so that I could notate the piece. I still remember having to play in both hand separately which, with hindsight, led to the mistakes in the original which I changed when the piece was re-edited the piece.
Dream Tunnel would be ideal for a piano student who is bridging the gap between Grades 1 and 2 and therefore should be thought of and treated as a study for teaching purposes. I have been a piano teacher myself and have successfully used this piece to demonstrate ostinato and modal music; it is also very good for students that need help with their left-hand work.
The piece has now been complied with a group of small pieces under the title Romantic Miniatures for Piano. The set of pieces consists of my more interesting early compositions and any romantic miniatures that I have written up to the present day. I am often called to write such pieces so the set is liable to grow in the future.
